Our Mischief Athlete of the Month for May 2020 is a mother and healthcare worker: Kimberly (“Kim”) Sylvester. Despite the difficulties imposed on all of us by the COVID-19 crisis, there are a bounty of uplifting stories to be found; Kim’s CrossFit journey is one of them… and Kim’s journey is just beginning. Five months ago, in December of 2019, Kim walked into CFM looking for something new. Kim has always appreciated that participating in physical exercise is a choice, and that the effort she puts into it is wholly within her own control. No longer content with the training environments provided by traditional gyms, Kim found a supportive and communal atmosphere at CrossFit Mischief that pushes her to be her best self. Moreover, Mischief training sessions are positive experiences Kim can share with her husband and her children—one of whom is a high school senior and student athlete we have had the privilege of meeting at a Saturday class.
The current Stay At Home order has done nothing to curb Kim’s enthusiasm for CrossFit or her personal fitness ambitions. In her own words, “CrossFit has become a lifestyle”—one predicated on hard work, discipline, and sound movement fundamentals. Kim acknowledges that proper body mechanics are at the foundation of everything, and it is that mindset that will bring Kim closer to her 2020 fitness goals, which include performing unassisted pull ups and developing a more amicable relationship with running. Perhaps the most inspirational aspect of Kim’s journey is not just that she is a Registered Nurse (“RN”) who finds the time for personal fitness, but that she is a Type 1 Diabetic who has been able to utilize her fitness as a means to regulate her insulin levels and make healthier nutritional choices. Thanks for sharing your story, Kim. Congratulations!
