July Member of the Month
Congratulations to Spencer, our Mischief Member of the month for July, 2022. Participating in CrossFit classes is a relatively new experience for Spencer, who joined in March 2022, but in his own words, “who knew that something as simple as signing up for a gym can begin such a life changing journey.” In his short time at the gym, he has gone from a gym-hopper to dedicated CrossFitter! His progress is amazing, and he has become a part of the Mischief Family and a regular to the 6:30pm crew!
What motivated you to start CrossFit?
I was what you may call a 'gym hopper'. I would sign up for a typical do-it-yourself gym after a big surge of motivation, would attend for a couple weeks, the motivation would fizzle out, then ultimately be too embarrassed to cancel after spending $300 dollars on nothing. Once again, I had that big surge of motivation, but this time, I knew that the only way I could find success was to join a gym that held me accountable, taught me how to find success, and grew with me as I achieved the milestones I sought to achieve. Ultimately, this led to taking the leap and joining a CrossFit gym after reading testimony after testimony of people that found success in joining a community--not just a 'gym'.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I've been doing CrossFit for about 2, maybe 3 months now.
How has CrossFit improved your daily life?
Just as artists tend to say that by creating art, you begin to perceive the world in different ways--by joining CrossFit, I've begun to view my body and movement through a different perspective. Picking up a load of laundry off the ground isn't just a daily chore of life anymore. I've begun to see it as a series of motions--that of which being a full squat with a straight back (I can hear the coach saying, 'no rounding' already) followed by a quick grab of the handles back up to a standing position. Or perhaps lifting the couch while vacuuming -- deadlift followed by a quick sweep of the vacuum. It doesn't take very long in CrossFit to realize that it isn't just a great workout with a strong support cheering you on: it's also an education in the art of movement--an education that compounds into a healthier life.
How do you stay consistent with your training?
What keeps me consistent with my training is knowing that if I don't go to class, someone is watching and someone cares. At previous gyms, I knew deep down that no one cared whether or not I went. There wasn't a doorman or a coach that knew my name. As long as I kept paying the membership, it didn't matter whether or not I went. At CrossFit Mischief, the coaches know me by name: they remember the last time I went, they want to know the next time I'll go, and they'll notice really quickly if I stop going (luckily, I've never had to test the last part). In every fitness journey, there's going to be a time when the motivation wanes, the excuses pile up, and you begin to really question whether or not you care about training. Luckily, when/if there comes a time when I begin to question whether or not I really care about my journey, I always know that there is someone at CrossFit Mischief that does.
What do you like most about CrossFit Mischief?
Most definitely the community. Don't get me wrong: the workouts are great, the education of the coaches are stellar, and the results are definitely showing, but what really keeps me coming back the most is that working out at CrossFit Mischief is an experience--not just something I have to do to keep healthy. We laugh, we smile (even when the workout is grueling), and it's something I've actually begun to look forward to as part of my week compared to my prior experiences with gyms.
Favorite CrossFit exercise?
Decisions, decisions, I've learned so many in so little time... If I had to make a decision, it would likely be the push press: there is something just so empowering about taking a weight the very highest it can go--right above your head. In all actuality though, choosing a favorite Crossift exercise is like choosing a favorite child: you love them all equally in their own little ways.
Favorite healthy snack?
I would say Roasted Red Bell Peppers. I don't know why, I'm sure there is a logical explanation, but roasting a Bell Pepper takes it from an 'ehh' food to a whole other level that works with so many other foods. Just absolutely delicious.
Favorite cheat food?
French Fries all the way. Crinkle cut, waffle, shoestring, I haven't met a french fry I didn't love and I'm still waiting on a miracle of God that a healthy french fry gets invented.
One Interesting fact about yourself?
I love to talk about and actively trade the financial markets (stocks, bonds, options, futures, etc). If you ask me a question on the subject, prepare to get your ear talked off, for I always have an opinion on what's going on in the market.
