July 2026 Member of the Month: Cheeni

Cheeni has been a consistent presence at CrossFit Mischief, showing up, putting in the work, and embracing the process. With over 12 years of CrossFit experience, he knows that long-term success comes from consistency, smart scaling, and focusing on progress rather than ego. Even while facing significant health challenges, Cheeni continues to prioritize his fitness and inspires those around him with his resilience and positive attitude. We're proud to recognize Cheeni as our July Athlete of the Month for his dedication, perseverance, and the positive energy he brings to our community!

What motivated you to start CrossFit?

I had joined an office in Scottsdale and several of the guys there were into CrossFit and persuaded me to give it a try. I was out of shape and looking for something that could spark me to get back into shape. More recently, I've been facing some serious health issues, and the consistency of exercise is one of the best things I can do to help support myself through the process.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Off and on for 12 years.

How has CrossFit improved your daily life?

It's given me a fitness community, which helps keep me motivated, and a social outlet as my work/life balance doesn't leave much time for meeting other people.

How do you stay consistent with your training?

It's helped to lose some weight and see improvement, as that helps maintain the motivation. But another important part has been scaling appropriately and not being too worried about doing less weight, so long as I can push the cardio. Scaling has helped keep me from getting injured, which has consistently been an issue for me.

What do you like most about CrossFit Mischief?

I like the range of skill levels and the camaraderie. I've been in other gyms where it felt hyper-competitive and it felt like there was a separation made between the 'Athletes' and the regular people. In this gym, it feels like everyone works together and supports each other, and that helps keep that sense of family which keeps me coming back.

What is one goal you hope to achieve with joining CrossFit?

I'd like to be able to maintain a healthy weight and keep exercising without injury.

Favorite CrossFit exercise?

Rowing maybe?

Favorite healthy snack?

does yogurt count?

Favorite cheat food?

Pizza

One Interesting fact about yourself?

I used to be a novelist, and met my wife on book tour. I've since given up writing professionally, but am still working on another book. It's been nearly 20 years since my last one came out.

I recently restarted CrossFit after a 6 year hiatus. I tried several different gyms, but just couldn’t find my community… until I walked into CrossFit Mischief. This is a great group of humans all around. From the coaches to the members. Eve

I visited the gym a few days as a Drop In while traveling through the area. Very friendly and welcoming coaches and members. I will definitely come back next time I’m in the area.
